London Games Festival 2024 Roundup

The London Games Festival is hosted by Games London and is a gaming event that has been running for almost 10 years. It is run annually every April and celebrates all things gaming, this includes gaming awards, new product releases, workshops, meet and greets and numerous additional events. This year, the London Games Festival ran from April 9th-25th in London City with over 45 events scheduled for the 2 week+ festival and we have been following the event throughout those 2 weeks to give you an overview into what occurred.

So, let’s take a look at what was mentioned at the event and what we could see in the future for the gaming industry.

What is the London Games Festival?

The main goal of the festival according to the founders, Games London, is to make London the games capital of the world by running the festival programme to support game creators and game cultures in the city. Every year, the festival has a main headline feature with 2024’s being Ensemble Initiative, one of the under-represented background industry creatives showing that the game industry is making more efforts to reflect different cultures and identities within the industry.

So now we have a basic understanding as to what happens at this festival, let’s get into key dates from the event that were especially significant.

 

BAFTA Game Awards:

April 11th bought the BAFTA Games Awards. Results can be found on the official London Games Festival website.

Here are some of the main award winners:

  • Best Game Award – Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Best British Game Award – Viewfinder
  • Best Debut Game Award – Venba
  • Best Evolving Game Award – Cyberpunk 2077
  • Best Family Game Award – Super Mario Bros. Wonder
  • Best Game Design – Dave The Diver
  • Best Multiplayer Game – Super Mario Bros. Wonder
  • Best Music – Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Technical Achievement Award – The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

Overall:

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 – 10 nominations
  • Marvel Spider-Man 2 – 9 nominations
  • Alan Wake 2 – 8 nominations
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom – 6 nominations
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – 6 nominations
  • Dave The Diver – 5 nominations
  • Final Fantasy XVI – 4 nominations
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder – 4 nominations

 

London Developers Conference:

April 11th also saw the London Developers Conference being held at the IET London – Savoy Place. It was an all-day event where developers could discuss upcoming ideas, plans, and topics within the gaming industry.

The event was ticket entry only, so we currently have little information on what was revealed, however, we know by looking at the schedule of the conference day that Super Nintendo, AI within gaming, PC and Console Gaming in 2024 were all planned to be mentioned. More will be revealed on this when we have further information…

Official Selection:

On April 18th, the London Games Festival 2024 also saw the 4th annual Official Selection, where new and innovative indie games released from all over the world are revealed and showcased. Overall, 40 games were released amongst 5 different categories, Made In London, Best Of British, International Innovators, Comedy and New Voices.
