On December 6th, 2024, Marvel Rivals released a hero shooter, fighting game available on PlayStation and Xbox X/S. Since the game was released at the beginning of the year and the beta version released halfway through 2024, the game has been very anticipated for its release. On top of that, a Marvel game hasn’t been released since 2020, so it has been a long wait since the previous game.
In this blog, we take a look at the new game highlighting why it was so successful, but the lingering talk about the fact the game is a similar copy to another successful match. So let’s get into it.

What is the plot of Marvel Rivals?
The story follows a meeting between Doctor Doom and his heroic 2099 counterpart. The interaction causes multiple universes to explode and merge into a ‘Timestream Entanglement’ causing new worlds to be created and explored. It’s time for the player to take control of the universe and put everything back right before the end of humanity as we know it.
Why are Marvel Rivals so good?
The game was well worth the wait, with a stunning variety of iconic heroes and characters plus strongly themed maps and levels. One of our personal favourite characters was the infamous Spiderman, who has great combat effects, defence skills and an overall iconic personality. His character is awarded a 5-star difficulty rating, and we can’t agree more! The look of the game is also stunning, with captivating colours and smooth actions that make the game a pleasure to play.
Is Marvel Rivals like Overwatch?
However, as we mentioned. There was one factor within the game that seemed to cause problems amongst players and that was the uncanny similarities between this new game and Overwatch 2 which was released in August 2023. We noticed that the style of the characters and the gameplay were very similar, though not as identical as we were expecting after the social media uproar.
The game was released as a closed beta version in July 2024 where fans pointed out the game's similar details, we assume after this backlash certain aspects were tweaked or removed to stop this comparison from happening. But whilst some changes have been made to make it less similar, the similarities are there.

Conclusion:
Overall, we do like the Marvel game however we think it wasn’t quite worth the hype surrounding it. We don’t even have these thoughts due to the copying of Overwatch; the game simply just wasn’t that special. Whilst it is certainly a great game for Marvel fans and gaming fans in general, we probably wouldn’t play it again. But what are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments below.
