Is there going to be a PS6?
To begin with, let’s start with the most vital information, when could we see this console hitting our stores? The PS5 console was released back in November 2020, which was 7 years after its previous console, the PS4 which was released in November 2013. We know PlayStation like they do their iconic November release to get in front of Black Friday and Christmas, so we are almost certain that the PS6 will follow this release month ritual. Focussing on the year, as it took 7 years for the PS5 to be made, we expect to see the PS6 announced and revealed in November 2027.
There have already been talks from individuals close to PlayStation that we will see a PlayStation 6 release in either 2027 or 2028, with some rumours even mentioning the console may release as early as December 2026. But with what previous knowledge we know about PlayStation major console releases, we expect November 2027 to be the most reasonable and most likely case.
The PlayStation 5 is PlayStations' most successful console, still selling out (and fast) even 4 years after its launch. Fans assume PlayStation are planning to hold off on the PS6 console release as much as possible whilst its predecessor is still doing so well.
Recent PlayStation console release dates:
- PlayStation Portal – November 2023
- PSVR 2 – February 2023
- PS5 Slim – November 2023
- PS5 Pro – December 2024
What features will the PS6 have?
And now let’s move on to what the PlayStation 6 concept could be. There have been rumours of PlayStation 6 leaks with a document showcasing some features we could expect to see. The most popular and talked about is the new PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which will allow all games to run at 4k at 120 frames per second or 8k at 60 frames per second. This means the game and graphics will have extra pixels for improved visuals.
Fans have heard too that AMD will yet again be partnering with PlayStation for the PS6 console. This company offer impressive power and backward compatibility to their consoles. As well as this, AMD is planning to release a new generation of chips which will be released in 2025. Of course, fans assume this chipset will be included in the PS6 console. Finally, with the possible upcoming 3-year wait for the release date, we assume so many new factors will be released for gaming in general. One of these is storage capacity, hopefully, we see a minimum storage capacity on consoles at 1TB and a possible upgrade to 3TB+.
Current PS5 console specs:
- Release date: November 2020
- Price: (Digital edition) £389.99
- Storage: 825GB
- Colour options: White
- CPU: AMD Ryzen Zen 2
- RAM: 16GB
- Chipset: AMD Zen 2 CPU
We also assume there will be a new PlayStation controller available when this console is out, much like the previous consoles.
