Is Split Fiction worth it?
As we mentioned, Split Fiction has been highly anticipated as the best multiplayer video game for 2025, and considering we're only 3 months into 2025, this is a big statement!
It was originally announced at The Game Awards in December 2024, so fans haven't had to wait long to get a copy. We found out at The Game Awards 2024 that Split Fiction has been in development since It Takes Two was released in 2021. It Takes Two was developed by Hazelight Studios, (The same company that developed Split Fiction) Although neither games are connected, interlinked or sequels to each other, they share some similarities like gameplay design, similar controls and graphic design. It Takes Two was highly praised as one of the best multiplayer games in 2021, so considering Split Fiction is very similar in design and has been in production for 4 years, fans were expecting something big!
The game trailer and further descriptions of Split Fiction also proved the game was very unique and original. Gamers have been keen to check out this game that's come from a respected and successful gaming developer to see if it really lives up to expectations. So what's Split Fiction about?
What do we know about Split Fiction?
This multiplayer video game follows two main characters, Mio and Zoe, who've become imprisoned inside a world of their own stories after being connected to a machine designed to steal creative ideas. The players must work together using their sci-fi and fantasy knowledge to try to escape the simulation, heading through different stories and universes on the way to escape back to reality.
How long will it take to beat Split Fiction?
Of course with this being a review, we have to give our negative thoughts in the blog. And although it was exceptionally difficult to pinpoint a definitive 'problem', we've had to find something.
Our only pick is that the level length and depth could be further tweaked. Some levels felt a lot longer than others and tended to drag, we also noticed that these levels felt very predictive, when the end of the level eventually arrived, it didn't feel like an accomplishment as we'd already figured out the mission and goal well before the level ended. These longer levels also felt like they lacked challenge, possibly because of their length it was hard to fit in a consistent amount of action, combat and cooperation. If you're expecting difficult gameplay for multiplayer, keep in mind you don't always get that experience.

Opinions:
Overall we love this game! The fact it's completely cooperative is a feature that we love, and it's refreshing to see a game that doesn't make allowances for solo players, it's entirely reliant on two gamers. What makes this even better is the fact only one of the two players needs to have the game installed, if another friend downloads 'Friends Pass' and has a stable connection, they can join in the cooperative adventure! This is great as Split Fiction could easily make it so you must both purchase the game to play, but only needing one person to install it allows so many more people to explore and play the game.
